A Freelance project for a watch party for the movie Sinners by Ryan Coogler

Ryan Coogler’s Sinners delivers a haunting and deeply emotional experience, capturing the heart and grit of 1930s Mississippi with stunning authenticity. The film’s raw down-south atmosphere... from the dusty rural roads to the intense energy of the juke joints... immediately resonated with me, Maurice Miller, on a creative level. Inspired by the film's richly textured scenes, I set out to design a mock-poster series that blends traditional poster aesthetics with modern digital art mediums. My goal was to honor the original cinematic feel while offering a fresh visual interpretation.
The artwork draws heavily from key moments that stood out to me... the vibrant yet shadowed energy of the club scenes where dancers moved with both joy and defiance... the looming, menacing presence of the vampire threat that served as a symbolic reflection of deeper societal fears... and the chilling, violent emergence of the white KKK members toward the film’s climax, whose actions tried to extinguish the very hope and resilience the characters fought to preserve. These scenes, heavy with layered meaning and symbolism, informed the tone, color palette, and design choices of each piece I created.
As a designer and storyteller, Sinners left a lasting impact on me. I loved this movie deeply... and I encourage anyone, especially those with African American or Irish roots, to go experience it for themselves. Look closely at the symbolism embedded throughout the film... it is powerful, moving, and speaks to a shared history of struggle, strength, and spirit. Inspired by this incredible work, I am planning a special watch party featuring the collages and mock-poster graphics I crafted... a celebration of creativity, heritage, and the stories that continue to shape us.
